This route represents several firsts for me. 1. This is the first daily routine I have had that does not involve getting in a car or on a bus. 2. This is the first time in my life I have had a job that requires me to get up every morning. 3. This is the first time outside of school that I have had my own studio practice: a destination entirely mine and dependent on me to run.
The trip from work to home to studio on bike is a transition from external to internal rhythms. My brain has to move itself away from the work that I do for someone else to the work that I do for myself. The bike ride helps this happen.
